PURPOSE:

This course will introduce students to concepts of Global Citizenship and Community Service through developing their leadership and community problem-solving. For students taking the class in 2023-2024, the course will emphasize more concepts in Global Citizenship since they focused primarily on Community Service during the previous year.

CONTENT:

Principles and Phases of Community Service, Active Service in School Community and Local Community, Community Interviews/Needs Assessments, Introduction to Activism, Servant Leadership, Community Service through STEAM, Using Social Media to create Real-World Change; Intro to Global Citizenship, Self-Directed Service, Intercultural Communication and Collectivism vs. Individualism, Global Issues.

SKILLS:

Students will conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and refocusing the inquiry when appropriate; Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research; Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences; Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
